Lilyfield’s Daylilies

Amidst the beauty of all the flowers at Lilyfield it is a gorgeous opportunity to select which ones to introduce the following year. The slow down of winter with files full of pictures helps the process out. I can take the time to notice that Chicken Scratch has purple along along the midrib of an otherwise deep red eye and that the petal ends are crinkly and ruffled.

Chicken Scratch will change in form and tone with the weather. At the same time it will be bright throughout even the hottest days, ready to be admired in the cool of an evening garden walk.

It was the cold days in March that helped bring on reflections of warmer times to create names that have meaning for their assigned blooms. Surf To Shore is a tiny reflection of the human experience of riding a wave.

Surf to Shore has many buds producing big, beautiful pink and purple blooms. I spent a lot of time last summer taking pictures in the full sun and the late day light capturing its easy free form.

The big exotic blooms of Burnout, Alpenglow Hour and She Is On Fire always catch my eye, they give this huge freedom that pushes the bounds of what pleases us gardeners. Still, those consistent in form and beauty each day hold a soft spot. The workhorses of our cameras and perennial beds. From every angle they are pleasing and content. So relaxed and unworried, Float Away will be the same everyday like its cousin Wildly Content.

These daylilies are special and I am so glad to release them for 2025. You will enjoy them in your garden like I have for many years.
