GROWING MARTAGON LILIES FROM SEED

Canadian hybridizers Eugene Fox, Fred Tarlton, Daniel Dale, Frank Skinner and others have contributed to the advancement of this still somewhat rare lily. Martagon lilies enjoy growing in the shade as well as in the sun in garden zone 3. They exhibit delayed hypogeal germination. First the seeds are planted in damp (not soggy) peatmoss in warmth and darkness which allows for germination, followed by a cold period, followed by planting out. There are variations on the method. These are the instructions we follow.
